Guaíba level monitoring during the worst floods in Brazilian history
In May 2024 the Guaíba rose past 5 m and flooded large parts of Porto Alegre. greenmetrics.ai level sensors kept reporting throughout the event, giving the civil defence coordination room a continuous, trusted reading while other gauges went offline.

How it unfolded
- 29 Apr
Sustained extreme rainfall across Rio Grande do Sul. The Guaíba begins to rise above its 3 m flood level.
- 2 May
Sensors on the Guaíba report the level crossing 4 m; first city-wide alerts are issued to the coordination room.
- 5 May
Peak of 5.3 m — the highest ever recorded. greenmetrics.ai readings remain online while several other gauges are lost.
- May
Hourly level and trend published to authorities and citizens throughout the month-long event.
Why it matters
Porto Alegre showed what continuous, street-level data means during a disaster: one trusted number the whole coordination room could act on. The deployment is now being extended to the metropolitan region.
